In order to follow their mission of protecting stray, homeless, abused, and abandoned animals, SCRAPS does not take in owner surrendered pets. This allows them to better serve the stray animals in our community.
If you are thinking about relinquishing your pet, there are some options you may not know about. Here are several things to consider:
Before You Relinquish Your Pet
Is there a behavioral issue? SCRAPS has a library of information and free training classes to help correct the issue and keep your pet at home.
SCRAPS also offers a food bank.
Many area veterinary clinics provide low cost services or payment plans. Please call them to find out more information.
If you are moving, many places in Spokane will take pets. Do some research online or by phone to find a place that welcomes your pet.
Can you leave your pet with someone on a temporary basis? Ask them.
If You Must Relinquish Your Pet
Try adopting out your pet first. Your involvement can be a less stressful transition for your animal and you can help them find the right home.
Several agencies in Spokane such as the Spokane Humane Society do offer to take owner releases as part of their services. Please call them first to ask about their policies.
Finding a home for your pet:
- take some good color photos
- prepare your pet by making sure their vaccinations are up-to-date and they are spayed or neutered
- write a story about your pet; include the reason your pet needs a new home and the kind of home your pet needs
- tell everyone you know through social media, your family, friends, and co-workers
- put up posters and fliers at pet stores, dog daycares, dog parks, veterinary clinics, boarding facilities, and pet grooming salons
- be sure to include your telephone number or e-mail address so that interested parties can easily reach you
Choosing the Right New Home
Be sure to carefully evaluate all potential new homes. Trust your instinct and make certain you feel it’s the right fit.

- arrange a meeting and visit the potential new home
- get references
- charge a fee; doing so is likely to discourage anyone with malicious intentions

What NOT To Do
Leaving your pet somewhere to fend for themselves is a death sentence and illegal. Please consider all of your alternatives before you make this important decision.
