27 cats killed in Spokane Valley house fire

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A house fire in Spokane Valley Wednesday afternoon left over two dozen cats dead.

Just before 1 p.m. on Nov. 1, Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to reports of a house with smoke coming from the attic on the 4200 block of north Avalon Street. Crews arrived to the scene and found kitchen fire, and firefighters were able to knock the flames down quickly.

No one was home at the time, and no firefighters were injured. However, a total of 27 cats were already dead inside the house.

SCRAPS was called to help process the scene and collect the deceased animals.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
