SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A mobile home fire broke out in Spokane Valley Monday evening after a homeowner attempted to thaw frozen pipes with a propane heater.

According to the Spokane Valley Fire Department (SVFD), firefighters responded to the area of East Fourth Avenue for a house fire. SVFD said the fire started as the homeowners used a propane heater to thaw frozen pipes.

On Jan. 14, the same situation happened in Athol. The Timberlake Fire Department (TFD) responded to a burning home started by thawing frozen pipes with a propane heater.

TFD said the subzero temperatures caused their water hoses and pumps to freeze.

Firefighters remind you never to thaw a frozen pipe with an open flame. They recommend using an electric heating pad and wrapping it around the pipe’s frozen area.
