14th annual Spokane Bike Swap kicks off tomorrow

For those looking to buy or sell a bike, there’ll be an opportunity to browse nearly 1,000 tomorrow.

The Spokane Bike Swap will make its return for the 14th year in a row, with bikes, activities for kids and booths run by community organizations. Bike Swap Chair LeAnn Yamamoto said the event is meant to provide a space for people to come together over a shared interest.

“Bikes are wonderful. They make people smile,” Yamamoto said. “It’s a great event, and we have so many people walk out so happy.”

Volunteers and exhibitors have been setting up for the event at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center today, and Yamamoto said the Bike Swap is supported by over 100 volunteers each year.

Among the volunteers is Tracey McPherson. He’s been helping out at the event for eight years and said he doesn’t plan on switching gears.

“I just like the fact that we give back to the community,” McPherson said.

Giving back is also part of the mission for Spokane BMX, which will have a booth at the event. The nonprofit provides bike riding opportunities for kids and adults. Rich Kimpel, vice president of the board of directors, said the organization is hoping to raise awareness about its work.

“BMX, for most of us, has been a place where we got interested and started in cycling,” Kimpel said. “So we’re really just here to get kids on bikes, keep kids on bikes.”

Those looking to sell their bikes have until 7 p.m. tonight to check in at the expo center. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow. Admission is $7 online or $10 at the door, and kids under 12 can enter for free.

Bikes will be sold at discounted prices starting at 2 p.m., with some bikes up to 50% off.
