SPOKANE, Wash. – One person was injured in a house fire in Spokane Sunday morning.

Spokane Fire Department (SFD) responded to a one-and-a-half-story home in the 500 block of East Bridgeport Avenue around 6 a.m. on Nov. 12.

Fire crews arrived within minutes to find the home billowing with smoke. As SFD crews worked to put out the fire, they found an adult man suffering from severe smoke inhalation inside. Fire crews then transported him to a nearby hospital.

Two adults, four dogs and two cats were inside the home at the time of the fire and could get out without any injuries.

While the fire was quickly put out, it caused $25,000 in damages to the main floor’s back room.

The cause was identified as combustible materials placed too close to a space heater.

As cold temperatures continue across our region, SPD advises residents to keep space heaters at least three feet away from combustible materials. Portable space heaters should be turned off when unattended, placed on a flat surface and plugged directly into wall outlets. SPD says to avoid using extension cords or power strips to mitigate fire hazards.
