YWCA Spokane’s domestic violence helpline sees record call surge

SPOKANE, Wash. – The YWCA Spokane is on track to receive 6,000 calls this year through their domestic violence helpline, marking the highest number in a decade.

This month, YWCA Spokane aimed to raise $50,000 to support the advocates handling the increased volume of calls.

Briana Burner from YWCA Spokane highlighted the importance of the initial contact for survivors.

“I hear all the time from survivors that that first contact, the thing that really strikes them about it, is being believed,” Burner said.

Burner explained that isolation, intimidation and dominance are key factors YWCA Spokane assesses in potential domestic violence situations. Those answering the phones provide a critical safety line.

“To have that first contact with someone who says you don’t deserve this and I believe what you’re saying… that’s life changing,” Burner said.

The individuals answering calls offer a listening ear or share information, without initiating any legal process.

“It can if that’s what they need and that’s the journey they are on… but it can also just be someone to help them know they’re not crazy, they’re not alone, they do have options and that the YW is there for them,” Erica Schreiber, from YWCA Spokane, said.

The organization estimates they will receive 1,500 more calls this year than the previous year. Schreiber emphasized the importance of the helpline.

“We see it as one of the most critical offerings that we have so if it came down to it, it would be looking at other services that we have and making adjustments so we can continue to make sure that helpline is here,” Schreiber said.

As October concludes, YWCA Spokane is $8,000 short of their funding goal. They expressed gratitude for the community’s support and hope for continued generosity to meet their target.

“It’s not an easy job to be on the front lines listening to the traumatic experiences of others… our advocates are always there… ready for those tough conversations,” Burner said.

For those who wish to donate, contributions to YWCA Spokane after today will support their area of greatest need.
