SPOKANE — The YWCA of Spokane will celebrate Women’s History Month by hosting its annual Women of Achievement Awards, recognizing nine women leaders and changemakers who have made significant contributions to the community.
The event on Friday, now in its 44th year, honors women across various categories ranging from education to business. This year’s ceremony received more than 60 nominations from community members.
Among the honorees is Becky Rempe, who is being recognized for her lifelong work in education and her efforts to make immigrant and refugee communities feel welcome in Spokane. Rempe is currently the director of the Barton English Language School, and was inspired to do this work after her own time living abroad.
“What would I have wanted when I am in a new country? That was the impetus of building some of the things into the school that I have,” Rempe said.
The YWCA is a social services organization that works to reduce disparities based on race, gender and economic status. The Women of Achievement Awards event serves as a critical fundraiser for the organization’s community programs.
“These funds they meet critical needs of women and survivors of all genders in our community,” said Briana Berner, event organizer. “So it is a really great opportunity to both celebrate women doing amazing work in our community that really supports others, as well as those services that are provided by YWCA.”
