YAKIMA, Wash. – An estimated 2,200 people gathered in Yakima for the “Celebrate Democracy/No Kings” event, joining a nationwide movement involving 11 million participants.

The event, organized by Yakima Indivisible, saw rally-goers waving American flags and carrying signs with messages like “This Land is Your Land.”

The event is part of nearly 2,000 registered “No Kings” events across the country, coordinated by the national Indivisible group.

Yakima Indivisible, which started in February, has grown to over 1,600 members, said a release.

Scott Dolquist, a Yakima Indivisible steering committee member, noted the group’s growth and the community’s eagerness to volunteer. “People have expressed a real need to volunteer their time and talent locally,” Dolquist said.

Yakima Indivisible said subcommittees have formed to focus on civic projects, including educational materials about the US Constitution and a community forum series.

“People from both sides really seem to want an alternative to the division they see happening locally and nationally.” Dolquist added.
