Yakima County updates burn ban rules for summer season

YAKIMA, Wash. – The Yakima County Fire Marshal announced a revised burn ban for unincorporated Yakima County, effective from Sunday, June 1, until Monday, September 1.

The fire marshal said in a release that outdoor open burning, including bonfires and burning vegetation, is prohibited.

However, propane, natural gas and charcoal-fueled barbeques along with wood pellet barbeques, wood pellet smokers and outdoor fireplaces are allowed, said the release.

“Our goal is to ensure human-caused fires will not divert the resources needed to fight wildfires,” Doug Werts, Yakima County Fire Marshal said.

Fireworks remain prohibited unless permitted in unincorporated areas. Residents are asked to check local regulations for incorporated areas and the Yakama Nation.

Agricultural burning is allowed with a permit from the Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency (YRCAA).

Violations of the burn ban can lead to fines or arrest, and should be reported to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office at (509) 574-2500.
