WSDOT uses creativity to boost work zone safety in Washington

WASHINGTON – The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is taking a creative approach to remind drivers about the importance of work zone safety.

In a recent campaign, WSDOT consulted its “oracle,” a mix of staff input and Google searches, to connect drivers with safety features found in work zones. The department used zodiac signs to represent different safety elements, such as Taurus symbolizing a concrete jersey barrier and Gemini representing flaggers. The goal of the campaign is to emphasize that the most important safety feature is the driver.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the leading causes of work zone crashes in 2024 include following too closely, excessive speed and distracted driving.

Drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert and remain calm to help prevent accidents. WSDOT hopes this light-hearted yet serious message will leave a lasting impression.
