WSDA offers wildfire preparedness tips for Washington animal owners

OLYMPIA, Wash. – As wildfires become more frequent during the summer months, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) urges animal owners and farmers to develop evacuation plans to protect both livestock and property.

Key steps to safeguard animals include maintaining important contacts for resources such as veterinarians, animal rescue groups and the USDA Farm Service Agency. Signing up for local emergency alerts is also recommended to stay informed, WSDA said in a release.

For animal health and safety, WSDA said it’s crucial to check ventilation, water, feed and structural damage. Ensure animals have access to clean water, food, and extra bedding. Veterinary care and medications should be readily available.

In case of evacuation, animals might find shelter at local fairgrounds. Livestock groups or county emergency management can offer assistance. The Red Cross shelters may also accommodate pets or connect you with animal care partners.

For human health and safety, it is advised to call 911 in emergencies and follow local officials’ evacuation orders. The Red Cross provides accessible shelters where service animals are welcome.

Documenting disaster-related losses such as animal mortalities and damaged structures is essential. Report these to insurance, USDA FSA and county emergency management, WSDA added.

The Red Cross can assist with shelter, meals, supplies, cleanup support and transitional housing. For those feeling overwhelmed, FARM AID (1-800-FARM-AID) and mental health hotlines (988 or 1-800-273-TALK) are available for support.
