Wrong-way driver causes fiery crash on I-90 in Post Falls

POST FALLS, Idaho – Idaho State Police (ISP) responded to a two-vehicle crash early this morning on Interstate 90.

ISP said in a release that a 62-year-old man from Spokane Valley drove an SUV east in the westbound lanes, colliding with a semi-truck hauling cars. The semi was driven by a 55-year-old man from Pennsylvania.

The crash occurred on the Spokane Street overpass where the semi driver attempted to avoid impact, but the SUV sideswiped the semi, rupturing a fuel tank and spilling diesel onto the road, ISP said.

ISP said the semi caught fire, blocking both westbound lanes.

Kootenai County Fire and Rescue extinguished the fire, saving the trailer, but the semi was a total loss.

The SUV driver was taken to Kootenai Health with minor injuries. The semi driver, his wife and their adult son were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

ISP are investigating the crash, including whether impaired driving was involved.

Westbound I-90 was closed at Spokane Street for several hours for cleanup.
