COEUR D’ ALENE, Idaho – Amid scorching temperatures, protestors gathered for the “Workers Over Billionaires” demonstration, voicing concerns over President Donald Trump’s policies.
“I didn’t come out here for my well-being,” protestor Karen Mello explained.
Mello said she joined the protest not just to stand against the administration’s policies but out of love for her country.
“I came here because I love my country, and I’m a patriot,” Mello said.
With a sign reading “Hands Off Social Security,” Mello expressed concern about changes she believes threaten the program.
The Trump administration has implemented several changes to Social Security, claiming these adjustments aim to increase efficiency.
Susan Smith, another protestor, focused on protecting veterans’ rights.
“It’s part of our blood, I think, to serve our country,” Smith said
Coming from a family with a long history of military service, Smith is worried about federal changes impacting veteran benefits. The administration argues these changes will enhance care and accountability for veterans.
“That’s what makes me proud of the country, is how well they take care of the veterans,” Smith explained.
Many of the protestors, like 80-year old Sandra Boynton, aim to be on the “right side of history.”
Boynton said, “I want my children and grandchildren to know that I did something – that I didn’t stand passively.”
Mello hopes for a balanced approach in the future.
“An eagle has two wings, its heart is in the middle,” Mello explained.
Protests for ‘Workers Over Billionaires” took place across the country on Labor Day.
