Windstorm destroys an Athol family’s home construction

ATHOL, Idaho — This week’s windstorm caused the Wilson family in North Idaho to lose the home they are building.

It was a setback that the family was hoping wouldn’t happen.

“It was the most heartbreaking sound I had ever heard,” said Crystal Wilson.

This isn’t the family’s first time losing a home to a natural disaster. In 2018, they lost their home in Paradise, California to a fire that burnt nearly their entire town, called “The Camp Fire”. It was started when a metal hook failed to support an electrical line on a transmission tower. This forced the family to move to other parts of California, but after a few years, landed on the idea of building their own home from the ground up in North Idaho.

Daniel Wilson was building the house himself. He was aware of the weather conditions but felt he needed to continue on construction.

“I have to do what I got to do. I got to build,” he said.

Family has been helping the Wilson’s with the storm cleanup.

The family created a GoFundMe to help with costs from the storm damage.
