While owner battles illness, thief breaks into downtown Spokane coffee shop

SPOKANE, Wash – Beloved Spokane businesswoman Celeste Shaw has been battling a serious illness, posting updates about her health from the hospital. Friday’s update included news someone broke into her downtown coffee shop, Dear Coco.

Coco is on Main Avenue near Division on the east side of downtown.

Shaw posted Friday morning that someone broke in and that items have been broken, damaged, stolen and destroyed.

“I feel so ill and now I am heartbroken,” Shaw posted. “Coco will be closed through the weekend while we assess the damage.”

Tricia Leming, public information officer for the Spokane Police Department, said police were called to the business around 8 a.m. The department said an officer was looking for a female suspect Friday morning, but they don’t have any more information yet.

Shaw is a beloved business owner in Spokane, previously opening Chaps and Lucky Vintage shop.

Within minutes of posting the update on Instagram, more than 100 people commented, offering help and prayers.

Main Avenue Tattoo posted, saying “Someone broke into Cocos cafe in our building last night. Any information on this matter would be greatly appreciated.”

Katy Sheehan is the director of the Community Building Foundation, located across the street from Coco. She said she’s had similar break ins at her business.

“Just really sorry for the business and for Celeste,” Sheehan said. “It’s always a big hassle and a pain and just something that you have to deal with.”
