Western Washington police officer shot multiple times during traffic stop

FERNDALE, Wash. — A Lummi Nation police officer was shot multiple times while the officer investigated an incident where a car drove off the road and into a ditch southwest of Ferndale early Monday morning.

According to a press release from the Lummi Indian Business Counci 37-year-old officer was shot around 1 a.m. Monday morning while reaching out to the driver of the crashed vehicle.

After shooting the officer, the release said the suspect ran off. As of noon on Monday, the search for a suspect was still underway.

Chairman Anthony Hillaire said the incident was a moment for the community to unite.

“Our hearts are heavy today,” Hillaire said in a statement. “In times like this, we must come together as one people — strong, prayerful, and united in care for one another.”

Indian business council offices were closed Wednesday until further notice as a precaution.

The release didn’t give an update on the condition of the officer who was shot.
