WENATCHEE, Wash. – A significant water main break occurred on Wenatchee Ave just north of Fifth Street shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, according to Tom Wachholder, public works director for the City of Wenatchee.
The break involved a 10-inch cast iron water main from the 1960s, resulting in damage to nearby properties. Crews are currently excavating the area to address the issue. The extent of the damage remains unknown, but fortunately, no injuries have been reported.
The break was so severe that it undermined the sidewalk and road, causing an excavator to sink when it arrived on the scene.
Wenatchee Ave and a portion of Fifth Street are closed, with detours in place. There is no estimated time for when the repairs will be completed, but crews will work around the clock until the road is reopened.
About 20 properties have had their water shut off due to the break. Residents in the vicinity may notice discolored water and are advised to flush their taps for 10-15 minutes.
