Washington’s population growth continues at slower pace

WASHINGTON – The state of Washington’s population has increased to 8.1 million, according to the latest data from the Office of Financial Management. This growth comes after the state added about 79,000 people over the past year.

This recent increase marks a slower growth rate compared to the average pace seen back in 2010. The majority of this growth resulted from people moving into the state rather than new births. Net migration accounted for 78 percent of the population increase.

Housing construction has kept up with this growth, particularly in King, Pierce, Snohomish, Spokane, and Clark counties. Notably, nearly 70 percent of all new homes are multi-family units, reflecting a trend towards more dense housing options in these areas.
