SEATTLE – Washington Attorney General Nick Brown announced a lawsuit with two other states to stop the Trump administration from terminating billions in funding for electric vehicle infrastructure.
Brown stated in a press release that Washington could lose more than $71 million in funding if the courts do not intervene.
“The president’s illegal claw-backs aren’t spending reductions – they’re cash grabs that rob taxpayers,” Brown said.
The lawsuit challenges the Federal Highway Administration’s decision to withhold or withdraw NEVI program funds, which were appropriated by Congress under the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
Brown touted Washington as a national leader in electric vehicle adoption aiming to cut transportation-related pollution.
The state has zero-emission vehicle standards and requires all new passenger cars, light-duty trucks, and medium-duty vehicles sold in Washington be zero emission by 2035.
The lawsuit, joined by 16 other attorneys general, seeks to restore the funding for essential electric vehicle infrastructure.
Brown is co-leading this legal effort with California and Colorado. Other states involved include Arizona, Delaware, and New York, among others.
