Washington State updates animal cruelty laws with stricter penalties

OLYMPIA, Wash. – New legislation broadening the scope of criminal offenses and penalties associated with animal fighting and cruelty has been signed into law in Washington State.

ESHB 1149 now introduces harsher penalties for animal fighting and cruelty offenses.

Those found guilty of animal fighting face a class C felony charge resulting in up to five years in prison, with even more severe consequences for repeat offenders.

Additionally, the law permanently prohibits individuals convicted of first-degree animal cruelty or animal fighting from owning or residing with animals.

One key aspect of the bill is the increased authority given to law enforcement and animal control officers. They are now permitted to enter private property without a warrant if an animal is in imminent danger.

Additionally, officers can seize animals believed to be suffering from serious injury or neglect.

The new law also targets those who neglect responsibilities towards an animal, leading to unnecessary suffering. This includes failing to provide essentials such as food, water, shelter, and medical care.
