Washington State University students react to head coach departure

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University students are reacting to the news that head coach Jimmy Rogers will be leaving after just one season.

Rogers announced his departure on Friday, leaving students feeling unsettled. Many had heard him speak about rebuilding the program at the start of the season.

Josh, a student, reflected on the situation. “100% yes. ‘Cause I talked to people who went to his initial press conference as soon as he got to WSU, and how he talked about rebuilding the school and his future here. This is a complete 180 from that press conference,” said Josh.

The turnover of leadership at WSU has been noticeable. Just a month before, the athletic director also left, impacting campus morale.

Heather, another student, shared her perspective. “We don’t have, like, a stable coach, and therefore like our team isn’t very good. So I think it is affecting me, especially because this is my senior year, and it’s like we can’t win a game. And I guess the spirits are kind of low,” said Heather.

Some students worry that WSU athletics is becoming a stepping stone for coaches and players. Yet, they remain hopeful for the future.

Cole, a student, expressed his concerns. “I just think because of the changes the Pac’s no longer, and us being kind of a Group of Five school that we almost are looking at, like, a stepping-stone school where people are here just to advance. You saw Jayden de Laura, Cam Ward, now Jimmy Rogers, Jake Dickert so I’m just worried that people don’t see us as a long-term option, just as short-term success,” said Cole.

Despite the frustration, many students remain hopeful that the program can stabilize as they head into their bowl game.
