PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University has imposed new sanctions on the Sigma Chi fraternity following an investigation into hazing and underage drinking incidents last September.
The university’s transparency report revealed that Sigma Chi required a new member to carry an object at all times, creating a fear of repercussions.
Additionally, the fraternity allowed hard alcohol at a party where a minor drank without any ID checks or wristbands, according to the report.
After a hearing on February 23, 2026, the university updated its report with the sanctions.
Sigma Chi will lose recognition for two semesters, which may be shortened if sanctions are met by April 17.
The fraternity will face disciplinary probation and must maintain an alcohol-free chapter house for one year upon re-recognition.
Further sanctions require the fraternity to submit organizational planning documents, undergo membership review and hazing training, and meet with the Center for Community Standards.
The investigation began on October 9, 2025, and concluded on January 29, 2026.
