
India has paused its purchase of American weapons following the recent implementation of a 50-percent tariff on these goods. This decision is part of a larger tariff rollout that went into effect last week.
Canada is also responding to the tariff changes. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated, “We’re having discussions with the Americans, but, Canadians want us to focus here at home, build at home and that’s what we’re doing.”
The Trump administration claims the tariffs are generating billions in revenue and encouraging U.S. business investments. However, concerns are growing about their impact on the economy, particularly for American farmers who are facing higher prices for equipment and fertilizers.
Washington State has significant trade ties with India, exporting nearly 34 million apples to the country last year. This makes India the state’s fifth largest trade partner for apple exports. In return, leading exports from India to Washington include electrical machinery and textiles.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2018, trade between Washington and India through the state’s ports amounted to $2.3 billion, with $1.8 billion of that being exports.
