WASHINGTON – Recent research by Jasmine Escalera PhD, a career expert for Zety, highlights the growing concern of AI anxiety among workers. Escalera explained that AI anxiety is the apprehension workers feel about AI potentially taking over their roles. “Workers are feeling anxiety around what might happen if AI takes over their role or part of their role,” she said.
AI is increasingly automating tasks, impacting entry-level, clerical and administrative jobs. Escalera noted that Gen Z professionals entering the workforce are particularly anxious, with many considering shifts to entrepreneurial or trade jobs. “Gen Z actually making shifts away from corporate America and saying, what’s the point of getting a college degree if I may not be able to get a job anyway?” she said.
Escalera’s research utilized Google Trends to analyze keywords like “AI job loss” and “AI layoffs,” revealing significant concern in Washington State, a tech hub. Microsoft and other companies are implementing layoffs due to AI redundancy. For those affected, Escalera advises evaluating career paths and skill development. “It’s important for you to be proactive and ask and inquire about how your role is going to shift,” she said.
The research underscores the need for workers to adapt to AI’s evolving role in the workplace. Escalera encourages open conversations with employers about AI’s impact and suggests focusing on skills that complement AI. “AI is going to be a part of every profession,” she said, emphasizing the importance of using AI ethically and strategically.
