It’s the holiday season, and some people like to deck their car in lights as well as the halls. However, in the state of Washington, doing so is illegal and can land you a fine.
Washington State Patrol’s public information officer for District 4—covering Adams, Ferry, Lincoln, Pend Oreille, Spokane, Stevens, and Whitman counties—took to social media to remind the public about state law.
“Not to be a grinch and we appreciate the Christmas Spirit but wrapping your car with Christmas lights in Washington state is illegal,” WSP wrote.
WSP also cited the specific laws it violates: RCW Chapter 46.37 (Vehicle Lighting) and WAC 204-21-230 (Aftermarket Lighting).
