Washington State legislative session to consider parental rights and transgender sports initiatives

OLYMPIA, Wash. – As the Washington state legislative session approaches, two significant initiatives are set to be reviewed by lawmakers. The political group ‘Let’s Go Washington’ submitted petitions on Friday with more than 800,000 signatures combined in support of these initiatives.

The first initiative addresses parental rights in public schools. It proposes repealing changes made to the state’s Parents’ Bill of Rights in 2025, which removed guaranteed access to some student medical records. Supporters of this initiative argue that the changes weakened parental authority, while opponents believe the changes protect student safety and privacy.

The second initiative focuses on transgender athletes, specifically aiming to prevent transgender girls from competing in girls’ sports. Advocates for the initiative assert that it ensures fairness in athletics. However, critics caution that it could increase discrimination against transgender students.

State officials are currently tasked with verifying the signatures on these petitions. If the signatures are approved, lawmakers will have the option to adopt the measures, reject them or send them to voters.
