OLYMPIA, Wash. – With colder months ahead, the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office is emphasizing the importance of proper detector installation and maintenance to prevent poisoning.
The United States Fire Administration notes that more than 150 deaths occur annually from carbon monoxide exposure.
In Washington State last year, two people died and over 500 incidents were reported.
Carbon monoxide, an odorless and colorless gas, poses a deadly risk if undetected.
Residents are advised to install detectors on every level of their homes, particularly near sleeping areas.
Testing detectors monthly and replacing batteries yearly is recommended.
Detectors should be replaced every five to seven years, according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
If a detector alarms, exit the home immediately and call 911 or your local fire department once outside.
Generators should never be used indoors.
