Washington state enacts law protecting Good Samaritans

OLYMPIA, Wash. – A new law is now in effect, offering legal protection to individuals who break into locked vehicles to rescue children and pets. This law is part of more than 300 that went into effect statewide.

The legislation shields rescuers from civil lawsuits if they act in good faith. It specifically applies to rescues involving vulnerable individuals, such as children and adults with disabilities, as well as house pets. However, the protection does not extend to livestock.

To be protected under the law, rescuers must call 911 and stay with the person or pet until help arrives. This ensures that the rescued individuals or animals receive proper care and attention after the incident.
