WASHINGTON — The Washington State Senate has passed a bill aimed at safeguarding sensitive voter data. The legislation will now move to the House for consideration.

The Senate approved Senate Bill 5892 with a 29 to 20 party-line vote. The bill is sponsored by Senator Marcus Riccelli.

The proposed legislation seeks to prevent county election officials from releasing confidential data such as driver’s license numbers, Social Security numbers and full birth dates.

Under this bill, only the Secretary of State would have the authority to respond to requests for sensitive voter information.
