Washington Senate passes bill to ease pet owner stress during extreme weather

SEATTLE — The Washington State Senate has passed a bill aimed at alleviating the stress of being a pet owner during hot summers or cold winters.

Currently, it’s illegal to leave pets in a car while it’s idling, even if the air conditioning or heater is on to keep them safe. It’s also illegal to leave pets in a car that is turned off.

Senator Keith Wagner of Sedro-Woolley introduced the bill as a common-sense solution. The bill allows people to leave their pets in a car with air conditioning or heat for up to 30 minutes.

The bill now heads to the House for further consideration.
