OLYMPIA, Wash. – As summer approaches and forecasts predict warmer, drier conditions, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging residents to prepare for wildfire season.
In 2024, the All-Risk Mobilization Program assisted in 30 wildfire responses, costing approximately $23 million.
The financial and environmental impacts of wildfires underscore the need for prevention and preparedness. The SFMO recommends several tips to reduce risk and stay prepared.
Residents are advised to clear dead vegetation from around their homes, participate in community cleanup days, practice daily fire safety, use fire-resistant materials in construction and stay informed of emergency alerts.
Preparation is also key. The SFMO suggests creating an emergency kit with food, important documents, a battery-powered radio, a first aid kit and necessary medications.
Residents should have a communication plan to notify neighbors, practice escape routes, pack their vehicles with essentials and follow evacuation orders.
