WASHINGTON, D.C. – Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) has introduced a congressional measure that proposes to permanently reauthorize the Timber Production Expansion Guaranteed Loan Program.
In a press release, Rep. Newhouse touted the Supporting American Wood and Mill Infrastructure with Loans for Longevity (SAWMILL) Act with emphasis on Washington State’s timber industry, stating it provides jobs, reduces wildfire risks and aids in forest management.
“The SAWMILL Act gives timber mills the ability to grow their operations and support rural communities who stand to benefit even more from a strong, local timber industry,” said Newhouse.
The TPEP program offers long-term, low-interest loans to timber companies to invest in facilities and equipment. It focuses on supporting mills that process hazardous fuels, boosting rural economies and reducing wildfire risks.
The legislation has garnered support from several organizations, including the American Wood Council and American Forests. Jackson Morrill, President and CEO of the American Wood Council, praised the act for protecting U.S. wood product manufacturing and rural jobs.
“Our nation’s sawmills and wood processing facilities directly employ nearly half a million Americans,” said Morrill.
Rebecca Turner from American Forests acknowledged the historical significance of sawmills in rural America, stating that the SAWMILL Act supports mills in forest restoration.
“For generations, sawmills have been economic engines of rural America,” said Turner.
The Lumber Manufactory (TLM) also supports the act, with CEO Michael Grasso noting its alignment with the Executive Order for Immediate Expansion of American Timber Production.
“The SAWMILL Act directly addresses the objectives outlined in the Executive Order,” said Grasso.
Companion legislation has been introduced in the U.S. Senate by Senators Tim Sheehy (R-MT) and Jeff Merkley (D-OR).
