Washington ranks high for worker benefits according to Oxfam America

WASHINGTON – Washington has once again been recognized as one of the best states for workers. A report by Oxfam America ranks Washington fifth in the nation for the third consecutive year.

The index evaluates factors such as wages, worker protections and the right to organize. Washington’s high ranking is attributed to its top minimum wage in the country, which stands at $16.16.

The state has also implemented new safety laws for outdoor and warehouse workers. Beginning in 2027, workers who are nursing will receive paid lactation breaks.

Washington is among seven states with “one fair wage” policies, ensuring that tipped workers are not paid less after tips.

Despite these achievements, Oxfam notes that the minimum wage only covers a third of the basic costs for an average family of four.
