WASHINGTON – The Washington Department of Ecology is proposing updates to cut pollution from new commercial vehicles.
These updates aim to help the industry transition to zero-emission trucks with increased flexibility and state funding.
The proposed changes to the Advanced Clean Trucks rule allow manufacturers to gradually increase zero-emission medium- and heavy-duty vehicle sales through 2035.
Alternatively, they can buy credits from automakers who exceed the requirements. The regulation permits 25-60% of new medium- and heavy-duty vehicles sold in Washington to still be diesel-powered by 2035.
Public participation is encouraged, with written comments on the proposed changes accepted from May 15 to July 3. Public hearings are set for June 24, at 9:00 a.m., and June 25, at 5:00 p.m.
The Department of Ecology expects to finalize the changes in October 2025.
