Washington plans more wildlife overpasses to boost driver safety

WASHINGTON – Washington state is planning to enhance highway safety with more wildlife overpasses and underpasses. This initiative, outlined in a newly released plan from two state agencies, aims to protect both drivers and wildlife.

Since constructing wildlife crossings along I-90 east of Snoqualmie Pass, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) reported tens of thousands of documented safe crossings by deer, elk, coyotes, and other animals.

WSDOT shared a video showcasing wildlife using one of these overpasses. The department noted a significant decrease in wildlife-vehicle collisions in the area since these crossings were introduced.

This development highlights the state’s commitment to reducing accidents and preserving wildlife. The successful implementation along I-90 serves as a model for future projects across Washington.
