OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Washington State Legislature plans to submit a petition urging the U.S. government to focus on diplomatic and humanitarian strategies regarding Iran, as detailed in House Joint Memorial 4017.
The petition highlights the ongoing plight of the Iranian people, who have faced decades of oppression. It points to documented human rights abuses such as arbitrary detention, suppression of peaceful assembly and restrictions on women and girls.
The document states, “Since December 28, 2025, the Islamic Republic of Iran has carried out a violent crackdown of historic proportions in response to public unrest,” noting that at least 7,000 people have been killed.
The memorial emphasizes the contributions of Iranian Americans in Washington state, who are directly affected by the situation in Iran. It warns against U.S. military intervention, citing risks of escalating violence and suggests alternative approaches. It also advocates for halting deportation flights to Iran and easing restrictions on Iranian nationals seeking refuge in the U.S.
HJM 4017 is scheduled for its first reading in Olympia on Monday, February 23.
