Washington lawmakers debate police face covering limits

OLYMPIA, Wash. — State lawmakers in Washington are discussing a new bill that would limit when police can wear face coverings.

SB 5855 mirrors one passed in California, which is currently being challenged by the Department of Justice.

Supporters of the bill in Washington say it aims to increase transparency while boosting accountability and trust within the community. However, opponents argue that it could endanger officers and their families.

Pete Serrano, Special Attorney to the Attorney General and the First Assistant for the Eastern District of Washington, highlighted the increasing risk of doxing and threats against law enforcement personnel.

“We’re seeing instances of increasing doxing numbers. The United States put out a position in the DHS that as of last fall. Doxing increased by 1000% and 8000% death threats to our members of law enforcement community. These folks are taking out some of the worst actors of our communities and removing them,” said Serrano.

The bill received a public hearing today. It will be discussed during executive session on January 15 in the Senate Committee on Law & Justice at 10:30 AM.
