SEATTLE, Wash. – The Attorney General’s Office launched the Washington State Data Exchange for Public Safety to collect police use-of-force data from law enforcement agencies across the state. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and trust.
WADEPS offers a cloud-based platform open to the public, providing access to police use-of-force data. Established with bipartisan support in 2021, law enforcement, community leaders, and researchers developed the database.
State law requires agencies to report incidents involving specific force types, such as firearms or Tasers, and provide details about the individuals involved. Agencies must begin reporting by September 2 and submit data monthly. Investigative outcomes will be updated within 30 days of completion. Importantly, the database does not collect personally identifiable information.
Washington State University manages WADEPS under a grant from the Attorney General’s Office. The system allows the public to analyze force rates across various incident types, like assaults or mental health calls.
Fife Police Chief Pete Fisher expressed enthusiasm for WADEPS, stating it enhances transparency and accountability. He noted, “If employed properly, it will provide the insight needed to allow police to tailor policy, training, and response for better outcomes.”
