Washington implements new ‘right to repair’ law for electronics

WASHINGTON – The state of Washington is taking steps to help residents repair their electronics instead of replacing them. Governor Bob Ferguson recently signed the state’s new “right to repair” policy into law.

The policy aims to make it easier for consumers to fix broken electronics. The Federal Trade Commission reported in 2021 that many consumers are forced to replace electronics because repairs often require specialized tools, unique parts, and inaccessible software. Some companies have used a practice called “parts pairing,” which can make replacing parts of a device impossible.

Starting January 1, the new law will require manufacturers to provide tools, parts, and documentation needed for diagnostics and maintenance to independent repair businesses. This requirement will apply to digital electronics, such as computers, cellphones, and appliances, that were first sold in Washington after July 1, 2021.

In addition to the electronics repair policy, Ferguson has also signed a similar bill focused on wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
