OLYMPIA, Wash. – The state of Washington currently holds more than $2.5 billion in unclaimed money and property, the Department of Revenue confirmed to NonStop Local. Some of it may belong to you.
The Money Match Program “automatically returns unclaimed property to Washingtonians without requiring the owner to file a claim or submit documentation based on specific criteria,” according to the state Department of Revenue.
Unclaimed property can include bank accounts, uncashed checks, security deposits and more. For a full list of what is considered unclaimed property, visit the Washington Department of Revenue’s website.
Property can default to unclaimed status when the owner has not made contact with it for an extended period of time. In Washington, that time period is three years.
In 2024, the state returned a record-breaking $154 million to its rightful owners, agency spokesperson Mikhail Carpenter said in an email.
Not all property is eligible for the Money Match Program, according to the Department of Revenue website.
“Be sure to check periodically as new unclaimed property is added each year and remind your friends and family to search. You never know when you might find unclaimed property waiting for you!”
