Washington fire marshal urges safety following over 450 camper fires last year

OLYMPIA, Wash. – As camping season kicks off, the State Fire Marshal’s Office is urging RV operators to prioritize fire safety on their trips. In 2024, Washington fire agencies dealt with 453 RV fires, resulting in seven deaths and more than $6 million in damages.

The SFMO emphasizes the unique risks posed by RVs, including compact living spaces and onboard fuel systems. Functional smoke alarms, escape plans, and portable fire extinguishers can make a significant difference.

“Don’t let a preventable fire ruin your adventure,” the SFMO advised. They recommend ensuring RVs have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and that occupants know at least two exit routes.

Fire extinguishers, specifically rated for RV use, should be easily accessible, especially near cooking or heating equipment. The SFMO also advises turning off gas appliances while driving or refueling and checking electrical and propane systems for damage before trips.
