Walmarts in Washington cracking down on non-service animals in stores

Walmart locations across the state of Washington will begin a new enforcement policy for non-service animals inside the store.

The guidelines, which were shared on social media by Walmart Clarkston, will go into effect on September 1.

Notably, emotional support animals will not be allowed inside stores.

“Under the ADA, an animal whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support to an individual does not qualify as a service animal,” the guidelines state.

A few examples listed for service animal work tasks include guiding an individual who is blind or has low vision, pulling a wheelchair and alerting the onset of a seizure.

These guidelines may be difficult to enforce, however—according to the policy, there is no requirement that the service animal wear a vest, or that the owner carries documentation confirming their pet’s trained status.
