A new initiative in the state of Washington could require voters to provide hard proof of U.S. citizenship before casting their ballots.
Currently, voters only need to check a box affirming their citizenship. However, the proposed measure would mandate using an enhanced driver’s license or birth certificate as proof.
To get on the ballot, the initiative needs 300,000 signatures. If successful, it will be presented to the state legislature, where it can either be enacted or referred to voters in the November 2026 general election.
