UW student pleads not guilty in alleged shooting of WSU football player after Apple Cup party in Pullman

PULLMAN, Wash. — made his first court appearance Friday.

According to Whitman County Superior Court records, Jakori Buchanan, 19, pleaded not guilty to , including second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault and possession of a pistol by a person between the ages of 18 and 21.

In Washington, individuals under 21 are prohibited from possessing pistols or semi-automatic rifles. Buchanan’s defense team requested that he be released on his own recognizance or have his bond reduced but the judge upheld his $10,000 bond.

If convicted, Buchanan could face more than 11 years in prison and a $26,000 fine.

Buchanan’s next court dates include an omnibus hearing on Oct. 24, a readiness hearing on Nov. 21 and a jury trial scheduled for Dec. 8.

occurred around 1:45 a.m. on Sept. 21 at the Aspen Heights Apartments, about two miles north of the WSU campus. Police said the shooting happened following a party celebrating the Apple Cup, the annual rivalry game between Washington State University and the University of Washington.

The victim, 19-year-old WSU freshman and football player Uilisone “Sone” Falealo, was reportedly working security at the party with two teammates when the shooting occurred.

Pullman police said Falealo has since been released from the hospital and is recovering well.

Buchanan, a University of Washington student, turned himself in to authorities on Sept. 24. . She said they had been chanting “Huskies” at the party before being escorted out, which allegedly led to the shooting.
