LEAVENWORTH, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Transportation reported that work on US 2 Tumwater Canyon is advancing due to mild winter weather.
Contractors have excavated unstable slopes. They’re also rebuilding the roadway above the high-water line. Upcoming tasks include installing guardrails and paving.
The project is on track for completion by mid-March.
Chumstick Highway is currently serving as a detour but recent wet weather has caused mudslides and slope failures on Beaver Valley Hill.
As a result, traffic has been reduced to one lane based on geotechnical guidance to reduce pressure on the shoulders and protect the road.
While crews have managed potholes and pavement issues, a full closure is necessary to completely address the slope problem. Until US 2 reopens, the lane reduction will remain in place.
WSDOT advises against using Chumstick Highway for cross-state travel. The road needs to remain open for local access.
Travelers are urged to take alternate routes if possible. For those who must use Chumstick, expect delays and drive cautiously.
