Coeur d’Alene, IDAHO — Police gave the ‘all clear’ at the Silver Lake Mall at 6:30 tonight after someone called threatening gun violence earlier today. Dozens of officers responded to threats called in to the Silver Lake Mall.
The following is from an update from the Coeur d’Alene Police on Facebook tonight tonight:
Around 3:50 p.m., officers from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, deputies from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, and troopers from the Idaho State Police responded to Blacksheep Sporting Goods at 200 W. Hanley Ave after an anonymous male caller issued a threat via the store’s phone. The caller claimed he was in the parking lot and threatened to enter the store within 30 minutes with a rifle and explosive device to harm people.
Officers and the Coeur d’Alene PD/Kootenai County regional SWAT team secured the parking lot and searched for the suspect. During this exhaustive search, no suspicious persons were found. The mall was then evacuated and the Spokane Bomb Squad, including their explosive detection K9, was called in to assist. Law enforcement spent nearly two hours clearing the building, but no suspect was located inside, and the search concluded around 6:30 p.m.
This incident appears to be a case of swatting, a growing issue in the Northwest where false threats divert significant law enforcement resources and disrupt businesses. The safety of the community remains our highest priority, and all threats are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated.
‘We appreciate the cooperation of the Kootenai County Sheriff’s
Office, Idaho State Police, and Spokane Bomb Squad for their support in ensuring everyone’s safety.’
