POST FALLS, Idaho – The Post Falls Police Department has welcomed its newest four-legged officer, a 4-year-old yellow lab named Uno who is making waves as one of few electronic detection K9 in the Inland Northwest.
Uno started his job just a few months ago and represents a significant advancement in the department’s investigative capabilities. The specially trained dog can detect concealed electronic storage devices such as memory cards, hard drives, USB drives and other small electronics that may be used to store illegal digital content.
“He definitely expedites our search process and lets us find things that normally we wouldn’t find,” said Detective Jason Cope, Uno’s handler and the department’s computer forensics investigator. “He can even smell into walls, under water and things like that.”
Uno is trained to detect a specific chemical found in electronic storage devices. Detective Cope trains with Uno daily to maintain the dog’s specialized skills.
The Post Falls Police Department received Uno through a competitive federal program administered by the United States Secret Service National Computer Forensics Institute. Post Falls police say they are the first law enforcement agency in the Pacific Northwest to have an electronic detection dog through this program.
