
WASHINGTON – The U.S. prison population grew by 2% from 2022 to 2023, with 1.2 million people held in state and federal facilities, according to new data from the Justice Department.
The number of men in prison rose by 2%, while the number of women increased nearly 4%. Regionally, Washington saw a 4.9% rise, Idaho 7.9%, Wyoming 2.7%, and Montana 6.3%. Oregon was the only nearby state to see a decline, down 1.6% from the previous year.
