Two suspects in Spokane firework attack surrender to police

Two suspects who police said were involved in the November 8 incident that resulted in severe injuries have turned themselves in.

Theodore T. Weymiller, 21, and Samuel J. Hopper, 22, contacted SPD Major Crimes investigators through their legal representation to surrender, SPD said in a release.

Both men were taken into custody at 7:00 a.m. on November 19.

They were booked into the Spokane County Jail and each faces two counts of 1st Degree Assault. SPD said the victim of the incident is still recovering from severe injuries sustained to his hand when the firework exploded.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Police Department is asking for the public’s help after a firework thrown from a vehicle severely injured a man early on November 8, 2025.

Shortly after midnight, officers responded to reports of a loud noise near 2nd and Wall. Initial 911 calls suggested a possible shooting, but upon arrival, officers learned it was not a gunshot. The injured man had already been taken to a local hospital.

Investigators found that a vehicle stopped near a group of people and someone threw a lit firework into the crowd before the vehicle drove away. The explosion caused severe injuries to a man on the sidewalk, necessitating his transport to Harborview Medical Center.

Security photos of the suspect vehicle were obtained through witness interviews and canvassing the area. The Spokane Police Department Major Crimes Unit is urging anyone with information or who recognizes the vehicle to contact Crime Check at 509-456-2233.
