
SPOKANE, Wash. – The men who died from overdoses at the have been identified.
According to the Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office, Tamico McDaniels, 50, and Nickolas Smith, 48, were identified on Friday. Their cause and manner of death remain under investigation.
, according to a report from Spokane County Communications Manager Martha Lou Wheatley-Billeter.
The first incident involved one of the male inmates booked into the jail on Sunday. He overdosed, and despite Narcan administration and full lifesaving measures, he was pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m.
The second incident involved another male inmate who was booked on Dec. 7. He overdosed and was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m. following a full medical response.
The third incident involved a female inmate booked on Dec. 10. She received medical attention and Narcan and was reported to be breathing normally shortly after 3 p.m.
The specific drugs involved in the overdoses are still unknown. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incidents, and the medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
All overdoses occurred on different floors of the jail and the inmates were not booked together.
So far in 2025, Narcan has been used 38 times at the facility, and there have been 35 trips to the hospital for overdose symptoms, not all of which were confirmed overdoses.
